FELLOWSHIP…SO WHAT? BY Issa Gachanja
Do not give up the meeting together, as some are in the habit of doing, but let us encourage one another- and all the more as you see the Day approaching. That’s Hebrews 10:25. As Christians we are in the habit of saying, “Christ is my personal savior.” And there is no harm in that! Salvation is very personal (the Lord looks at the heart). So why would the writer of Hebrews need to emphasize on fellowship?
Because there is STRENGTH and MOTIVATION in plurality. Two are better than one, how can one keep warm alone? A threefold cord cannot be broken… Ecclesiastes 4:9-12. We know the theory of the jungle, animals of prey will identify the victim from a herd of targets of prey (hehehe!), isolate it then attack. It becomes easy to get the prey when isolated because it lacks strength and motivation.
Because BEAUTY in the fellowship. Like precious oil poured on the head, running down on the beard, running down on Aaron’s beard, down upon the collar of his robes. It is as if the dew of Hermon were falling on Mt. Zion. For the Lord bestows his blessing, even life for evermore. That’s just how good and pleasant it is when brethren dwell together in unity… Psalms 133.
Because of the ENCOURAGEMENT! From personal experience, I have come to value fellowship. There is always the uniting factor, classmates, year mates, ministry, committees or even friends. Fellowships are the only places where you meet people with similarity joined together by the love of God. When people share their struggles, testimonies and ideas, you feel part of them because you can identify with the people in the fellowship. Unlike a church, fellowships are warmer because of the closeness and the specific unifying factor.
No fellowship is perfect. If you find a perfect fellowship, please do not join it, because you are imperfect and by joining you become a spoiler. You know people are sincere when you hear “mmekwazana” for we are human and our treasure is in jars of clay (read 2Corinthians 4). You will find the joker, the annoyingly silent, the irritably loud, the late comer, the inconsistent and the group of 3 who will always come and leave together, tell inside jokes before everybody then laugh maliciously hiding under each other’s armpit. Imperfect is the prerequisite to a testimony, for how shall we be made perfect if we are not imperfect. It is nothing to celebrate or be glad about but it keeps us aware that we are yet to be transformed into our immortal bodies and still need to work out our salvation…till Christ is formed in us.
Before you choose to leave that fellowship because somebody talked about you or because you are not “blessed” by the prayer session or the music, think twice. Before you point that finger at your brother or sister, consider you have three pointing you and the thumb pointing heaven, for the sake of peace, but for the strength, motivation, beauty and encouragement, belong and go to a fellowship this week!
